Project Overview

The delivery of the ForCity Plus 47T trams is part of a tram procurement project. Škoda Group secured the contract in February 2021. The EUR 110 million contract included the supply of 24 low-floor trams with an option for 21 additional light rail vehicles. Cottbus’ order included seven ForCity Plus 47T trams and the option has been exercised in December 2022.

Technical Specifications and Features

The new ForCity Plus trams have a width of 2.4 metres and a length of 29 metres. They offer a total capacity of 158 passengers, including 61 fixed seats and six folding seats. Accessibility features include two wheelchair spaces, a multi-purpose area for prams and rollators, level boarding through four of the six doors, and a deployable ramp. The trams are equipped with air conditioning, a modern audio system, and a digital passenger information system.

Operational Deployment

Seven of the 22 new Cottbus trams have arrived on site and are gradually being introduced into trial operation. The new vehicles will gradually replace the ageing Tatra trams but will initially operate alongside them.

Funding and Financial Details

The first seven trams were financed using the City of Cottbus’s funds and public transport funding provided under the Brandenburg State transport law. For the remaining 15 vehicles, a 90% subsidy rate was secured via the Investment Bank of the State of Brandenburg. These funds come from the Investment Act for Coal Regions and are being channelled into this project as part of the structural development of the Lausitz region. Sparkasse Spree-Neiße has supported the project as a lending partner.

Conclusion

The introduction of the new ForCity Plus 47T trams by Cottbusverkehr represents an investment in local public transport, with improved accessibility and comfort. The project is supported by funding from the City of Cottbus, the Brandenburg State transport law, and the Investment Act for Coal Regions.
