Introduction

Stadler has secured a contract to supply Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE) with two hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge trains for routes around Mount Etna in Sicily. The agreement, signed at EXPO Ferroviaria in Milan, includes the design, production, five years of full-service maintenance, and spare parts supply.

Contract Details

The contract, awarded after a public tender, includes the design and production of two hydrogen trains. It also encompasses five years of full-service maintenance and the supply of spare parts. Furthermore, the framework agreement with FCE includes an option for up to 13 additional trains of the same type.

Train Specifications

The trains, manufactured at Stadler’s headquarters in Bussnang, Switzerland, will each consist of two passenger coaches and a central “power pack” housing hydrogen tanks and fuel cells. Each train will offer 87 seats and space for a total of 147 passengers. The design includes PRM-compliant toilets and low-floor access for passengers with reduced mobility, as well as dedicated areas for bicycles and pushchairs. The trains are specifically designed for FCE’s narrow-gauge network, with an exceptionally low axle load of under 11 tonnes per axle.

Technical Features

The traction system is designed to handle steep gradients. The static converter and traction batteries are positioned over the motor cars to ensure optimal adhesion and traction under all weather conditions.

Deployment and Market Position

The hydrogen trains will operate on the Paternò–Randazzo route, which passes through the Etna Nature Park. With this new order from FCE, Stadler’s total number of hydrogen narrow-gauge trains for the Italian market rises to 19. Stadler is already building eight similar trains for Sardinia’s ARST and nine for Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC).

Conclusion

Stadler will supply two hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge trains to Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE) for routes in Sicily, including design, production, maintenance, and spare parts. The order also includes an option for more trains in the future. These trains will run on the Paternò–Randazzo route, contributing to sustainable mobility.
