Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) and Siemens Mobility have completed the upgrade of all 25 Class 717 trains to European Train Control System (ETCS) version 3.6.0. This enhancement improves operational capabilities on the Northern City Line between Finsbury Park and Moorgate in London, which is part of the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP).

Project Overview

GTR, in partnership with Siemens Mobility, has upgraded its entire fleet of Class 717 Great Northern trains. The upgrades enable these trains to operate in passenger service using an updated version of ETCS. The trains now run on the Northern City Line between Finsbury Park and Moorgate using ETCS Baseline 3, Release 2, also known as version 3.6.0.

Technical Specifications

The upgraded ETCS specification allows for enhanced operational flexibility in high-traffic areas. It connects trains to the trackside via GPRS instead of GSM-R. This upgrade is a component of the government-funded ECDP and is intended to accommodate high service frequency on the East Coast Mainline.

Aaron Meakin, GTR’s Senior Programme Delivery Manager, stated that innovations on the Northern City Line are paving the way for in-cab digital signalling on the wider UK network. Richard Cooper, Infrastructure Lead and ECDP Project Director at Siemens Mobility, highlighted the successful upgrade of the Siemens-built Class 717 fleet, which marks a significant step in transforming rail travel. Jonathan Daniels, Network Rail’s ECDP Integration Lead, noted that the entire GTR Class 717 fleet was upgraded to the new ETCS baseline level within three months.
