Euromaint Rail will Renovate 55 Passenger Coaches for SJ
Euromaint Rail and Sweden’s national rail operator Statens Järnvägar (SJ) have finalised an agreement for the renovation of SJ’s 55 second-class coaches.
Renovation work will be carried out at Euromaint’s workshop in Notviken, Luleå, and is expected to be finished in the first quarter of 2014.
The new contract is a continuation on a deal for the refurbishment of 160 coaches, which was originally undertaken by Euromaint during 2009-11.
Euromaint Rail workshop manager in Luleå, Daniel Eriksson, said that passenger carriage refurbishment is a large-scale project that will employ around 40 people.
“We can free up some expertise internally, but we will need to recruit a number of employees; everybody from electricians to installers,” Eriksson said.
Euromaint will be responsible for the replacement of seats and lighting, and further technical modifications.
The deal will see some technical systems, emergency brake bridging, door and vacuum systems renovated and the exteriors of the coaches painted.
Coaches will be taken out of service for the modernisation, which will be carried out in parallel on six to eight coaches at a time, requiring Euromaint to lease additional space to undertake the project.
“In order to be able to work as effectively as possible, we have rented additional premises of around 2,000m² with six-track spaces,” Eriksson said.
