Introduction

Alstom has been awarded a contract by Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) to deliver 234 Metropolis metro cars and a Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system with maintenance for Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line. The order, valued at several hundred million euros, will see the deployment of 39 driverless trainsets along the 35.3 km elevated corridor from Wadala to Kasarvadavali.

Project Scope and Infrastructure

Mumbai Metro Line 4, spanning 35.3 km, will feature 32 stations and connect Wadala in Central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane. The line will integrate with the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail, and other Mumbai Metro lines, becoming one of the longest metro lines in the city upon completion.

Alstom’s Contribution

Alstom will supply 39 six-car Metropolis trainsets, designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bangalore, Karnataka. The manufacturing will take place at the Sri City factory in Andhra Pradesh, with propulsion units produced in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and bogies in Savli, Gujarat. The Sri City facility has an annual production capacity of 480 cars.

Technology and Features

The new Metropolis trains will be equipped with features such as interior airflow cooling, wheelchair access, and bike racks. The trains will incorporate electrical braking systems and cyber security safeguards. Alstom will provide its Urbalis Forward CBTC system, developed at the company’s Bangalore site, enabling driverless operation (GoA4). The Urbalis Vision platform will be installed at the Operation Control Centre at Mandale depot, with a backup Control Centre at Mogharpada.

Maintenance and Operational Benefits

Alstom will provide five years of maintenance services through its FlexCare Perform program. The CBTC technology is expected to reduce travel times, alleviate road congestion, lower CO2 emissions, and enhance service reliability. The project is intended to provide safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible transport solutions.

Conclusion

The project involves Alstom delivering 234 Metropolis metro cars, a CBTC signalling system, and maintenance services for Mumbai Metro Line 4. The trains will be produced under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, and the Urbalis Forward CBTC system will facilitate driverless operation. The contract underscores Alstom’s commitment to sustainable and innovative public transport in Mumbai.
