Introduction

Essential work is scheduled on the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) from Monday 6 October to Friday 24 October, impacting railway services at Batley and Dewsbury stations. These upgrades are part of the multi-billion-pound TRU project.

Platform Extensions and Bridge Reconstruction

From Monday 6 October until Friday 24 October (excluding weekends), TRU teams will be working at Batley and Dewsbury stations to prepare for platform extensions. These extensions will increase the platforms to 150m and 200m long, respectively, to accommodate longer trains and increase seating capacity. Bridge reconstructions will also occur on this section of the railway.

Track and Infrastructure Improvements

During the three-week period, track and drainage renewal work will be undertaken to facilitate faster and more reliable services. Between Morley and Leeds, engineers will install foundations for overhead line equipment (OLE) masts to support the electrification of the route. Following the introduction of electric services between York and Church Fenton in August, 25 percent of the Transpennine route is now electrified.

Service Diversions and Rail Replacement

TransPennine Express services between Huddersfield and Leeds will be diverted via Wakefield during the works. Local stations in between will be served by rail replacement buses. Northern will divert its Wigan to Leeds services via Bradford Interchange. Rail replacement services will also connect Huddersfield and Halifax to Dewsbury and Leeds, along with local stations. Customers are advised to check www.nationalrail.co.uk for travel updates.

Weekend Works and Further Upgrades

Further work will take place over six consecutive weekends this autumn on 4-5, 11-12, 18-19, 25-26 October, 1-2 and 8-9 November, between Leeds, York and Selby. This includes track renewals, signalling upgrades, and the installation of foundations for new overhead line equipment. The new, fully accessible Barrowby Lane bridleway footbridge near Garforth will be installed, and the historic cast iron arches at Crawshaw Woods bridge will be removed for refurbishment. Trains between Leeds and York/Selby will be diverted via Castleford, with rail replacement buses serving local stations. Over the final three weekends, work will replace track points south of York. During this time, there will be no trains between Leeds and York, and rail replacement buses will operate throughout.
