Jakarta MRT Expansion: Sumitomo/Nippon Sharyo Metro Trains

Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo have been awarded a contract to supply 8 six-car metro trains, totaling 48 metro cars, for Jakarta North-South MRT Line Phase 2A. The contract is valued at JPY 17 billion (USD 111.3 million).

The Jakarta North-South MRT Line Phase 2 will be 5.8 km long, connecting Bundaran HI to Kota district. The project is expected to be completed in 4.5 years (56 months). As of September 2025, construction of MRT Jakarta Phase 2A has reached 53.32% completion. The implementation of CP206 package will complete the overall system readiness, ensuring that Phase 2A operates on schedule with the highest standards of safety, comfort, and reliability.

Future Plans

Upon completion, Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo will have delivered a total of 144 metro cars for the MRT North-South Line. MRT Jakarta plans to construct a new line running east-west across Jakarta with funding support from the Government of Japan. Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo plan to explore further opportunities to support the development of Indonesia’s railway network.
