Introduction

The Ontario government and CN have reached an agreement-in-principle for the purchase of property to facilitate the construction of dedicated passenger-rail track along the Metrolinx GO Transit Kitchener Line. This agreement is part of the province’s plan to establish rapid, two-way, and all-day GO Transit service between Kitchener and Toronto.

Property Acquisition

The agreement between the Ontario government and CN involves the acquisition of property necessary for the construction of dedicated passenger-rail tracks. This acquisition is a critical step towards enhancing the GO Transit Kitchener Line.

Project Scope

The Kitchener extension project will encompass approximately 25 miles of new dedicated GO Transit two-way tracks. The project also includes signal upgrades, bridge work, and platform expansions along the existing corridor. Currently, GO Transit operates on CN tracks to Kitchener.

Service Enhancements

Upon completion of the dedicated GO tracks on the Kitchener Line, GO Transit will offer two-way, all-day service, seven days a week, between Union Station in Toronto and Bramalea, Mount Pleasant, and Kitchener. Meanwhile, Metrolinx has arranged with CN to increase passenger service on the existing Kitchener Line, starting from Nov. 23.
