Hull Paragon: Remembrance Poppy Installation & Railway History

Introduction

An installation of approximately 2500 handmade poppies, created by artist Andy Pea, is on display at Hull Paragon Station as part of a national series of events commemorating 200 years of the railway. The artwork will be in place until Thursday 20 November and commemorates the First World War and the railway’s role in supporting the nation.

Installation Details

The six-metre-long sculpture, created by Hull-based artist Andy Pea, is made up of approximately 2500 handmade poppies and cascades from floor to ceiling. Visitors can stand beneath the artwork and look up through it. The installation’s location at Hull Paragon Station holds historical significance, as research revealed the story of a Northumberland Fusiliers 17th, North Eastern Railway Pioneers Battalion raised from the station’s staff during the First World War.

Community Involvement

Each poppy in the installation was crafted by members of the local community, including groups from the ReNew drug and alcohol rehabilitation service, Adelaide Primary School, the Lighthouse Project, and a local women’s refuge. Yeseniia Serdiuk, a refugee from Ukraine, worked alongside Andy and volunteers.

Historical Significance

Railway’s Role

The installation at Hull Paragon Station commemorates the role of the railway in supporting the nation during times of war. Andy Pea discovered his grandfather was part of the Northumberland Fusiliers 17th, North Eastern Railway Pioneers Battalion, enlisting during a recruitment drive at the station.

Artist’s Perspective

Artist Andy Pea stated, “Every poppy carries a story.” The installation represents remembrance and regeneration, with each poppy representing a life and a moment of hope. The installation aims to tell Hull’s story and that of the railway in its 200th year.

Events and Participation

Remembrance Service

A service of remembrance is scheduled to take place at Hull Paragon station at 11am on Friday 7 November. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Public Participation

Passengers and anyone passing through the station can make and donate their own handmade poppy, complete with a short note of remembrance or a personal message and leave them with volunteers from City of Culture and HEY UK.
