A Battery-Electric Multiple Unit (BEMU) is a type of electric train equipped with onboard energy storage systems (typically Lithium-Ion batteries) in addition to a standard pantograph. This hybrid configuration allows the train to operate on electrified lines using the overhead catenary while charging its batteries, and then switch to battery power to travel over non-electrified sections of the track.
Bridging the Electrification Gap
BEMUs are designed to replace polluting Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) on branch lines where full electrification is too expensive or technically difficult. They serve as a “bridge” technology, ensuring seamless travel between main lines and remote stations without forcing passengers to change trains.
Operating Modes
The operational logic of a BEMU is efficient and automated:
- Under the Wire (Charging Mode): When the train is under overhead lines, it draws power via the pantograph to drive the motors and simultaneously charge the battery packs.
- Catenary-Free Operation (Battery Mode): Upon reaching a non-electrified section, the pantograph lowers (or the circuit switches), and the train draws power solely from the batteries.
- Regenerative Braking: During braking, the kinetic energy is converted back into electricity and stored in the batteries, extending the operational range.

Challenges and Future
