Introduction

ProRail, the Dutch railway management company, enhanced its operational capabilities by deploying SAP S/4HANA on the Microsoft Azure Cloud, supported by Capgemini. This initiative aimed to improve user-friendliness, flexibility, and system reliability, addressing the limitations of ProRail’s existing SAP systems.

Background and Objectives

ProRail initiated the transition to SAP S/4HANA and the cloud to modernize its IT infrastructure. The project addressed challenges posed by the existing SAP systems, aiming to meet contemporary demands. The migration involved a large-scale data transfer to ensure system continuity.

Implementation and Scope

The implementation of SAP S/4HANA was part of a wider strategy to migrate legacy systems and introduce agile work methods within ProRail. The project focused on key back-office functions, including finance, purchasing, project management, and reporting, resulting in more user-friendly tools and processes.

Collaboration and Management

ProRail and Capgemini collaborated on application management to ensure continuity and prepare for agile work practices. A dedicated team managed ProRail’s entire application landscape, supporting both new and legacy technology. This approach facilitated easier support for existing applications and provided a stronger foundation for new tools, improving communication between internal and external parties and reducing ProRail’s time-to-market.

Outcomes and Future Plans

The deployment of SAP S/4HANA enabled enhanced scalability and improved data-driven insights for ProRail. Capgemini plans to continue its partnership with ProRail to support agile working practices, as well as the maintenance and expansion of the Dutch railway network.
