Fleet Expansion

Trenitalia’s recent delivery of 61 new regional trains is a component of FS Group’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan. This plan targets the introduction of 1,061 next-generation trains by 2027. The aim is to renew 80% of the regional fleet.

Investment Details

The delivery of new rolling stock is part of a larger EUR 7 billion investment. This investment is designed to improve services for commuters and regional passengers throughout Italy. As of the present, 596 new-generation trains have been delivered under service contracts with Italy’s regions and autonomous provinces, which commission regional services. Adding to this, 335 earlier train purchases brings the total number of new trains in circulation to 931.

Strategic Goals

FS Group’s CEO and General Manager, Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, indicated that the renewal programme aligns with the Group’s long-term vision. The Strategic Plan 2025–2029 includes EUR 100 billion of investment over five years. The goal is to offer modern, sustainable trains that meet high standards of comfort and safety. Regional services are seen as crucial for integrated and connected mobility, aiming to improve territories and support social, environmental, and cultural transformations.

Operational Impact

Trenitalia’s Regionale brand operates over 6,000 services daily, serving over 400 million passengers annually. This extensive network plays a significant role in Italy’s public transport system. The fleet renewal aims to improve passenger comfort and reliability while supporting national objectives for sustainable mobility and innovation.

The FS Group, through Trenitalia, is implementing a significant investment in regional rail transport. This includes the delivery of new trains and a broader strategy for fleet renewal and service enhancement. This effort is part of a larger investment plan with the objective of modernizing and improving regional rail services in Italy.
