Introduction

On Wednesday, September 10, representatives from the Huddersfield Giants presented a signed ball to the engineering teams working on upgrades to Huddersfield station. These upgrades, which involve the construction of extra tracks and new platforms, are scheduled to be completed by the end of September and are designed to reduce journey times and increase passenger capacity.

Project Overview

The project involves around-the-clock work to upgrade Huddersfield station. These upgrades are focused on track and platform improvements.

Infrastructure Upgrades

The initial two weeks of the 30-day closure saw significant progress on the John William Street bridge, where two new bridge decks were installed as part of the Huddersfield viaduct strengthening. This work will facilitate the addition of tracks and overhead line equipment (OLE) in the future.

Within the station, platforms 1 & 2 have been demolished for platform and track remodelling. This will lengthen the platforms, enabling longer trains with increased seating capacity to serve the station. New track, drainage, and signals have also been installed across the wider route.

Statements from Key Personnel

Brian Blacker, Commercial Manager at Huddersfield Giants, said, “It was fantastic to see first-hand the strides being taken in what they’re delivering in our town. Rugby League fans will be able to rely on better services, and we’re delighted to have presented their hard-working teams with a signed ball.”

Paul Sumner, TRU Senior Sponsor, stated, “We’ve made great progress in the first half of the 30-day closure, with major works that have been in planning for a while now coming to life. These activities take us a step closer to Huddersfield station serving as a vital hub for a new era of rail travel across the Pennines, which is a major boost for the economy locally and regionally.”

Customer Services and Investments

During the works, Network Rail, Northern, and TransPennine Express are collaborating to keep customers moving via diversionary routes and rail replacement bus services. Brighouse has been temporarily designated as a Rail-Bus interchange. TRU has invested £100m in diversionary routes to improve their reliability during main line closures.
