Introduction

Bulgarian Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov announced that the main train depots in Sofia, Plovdiv, and Gorna Oryahovitsa will be the primary facilities for the daily maintenance and storage of the new 60 multiple unit trains from Škoda Group and Alstom, expected to arrive next year. Karadzhov made the statement during a visit to the BDZ–Passenger Services depots in Ruse, Gorna Oryahovitsa, and Mezdra.

Planned Infrastructure Upgrades

Minister Karadzhov emphasized the need to secure reliable storage and maintenance facilities for the new trains. He highlighted that without modern operational bases, the new rolling stock risks faster depreciation and vandalism. The existing BDZ depots, built over 60 years ago, have not been modernized and do not meet the requirements for servicing the new electric multiple units.

Current Depot Deficiencies

Karadzhov noted the current state of the depots, citing that the available sheds are too short. The depots lack train washing machines and vacuum systems for cleaning toilets. He also pointed out the limited time remaining before the new multiple unit trains begin deliveries.

Proposed Actions

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that repairs and expansion of the sheds must begin urgently, tailored to the dimensions and technological requirements of the new trains. He will advocate for the 2026 budget to include funds not only for the three main train depots – Sofia, Plovdiv, and Gorna Oryahovitsa – but also for five additional auxiliary operational points in Vidin, Ruse, Varna, Burgas, and Sofia.

Financial Implications

Karadzhov stressed that without adequate maintenance and preservation conditions for the new rolling stock, an investment of almost two billion Levs would be wasted.

Karadzhov emphasized the urgency of these upgrades to protect the investment and ensure the efficient operation of the new rolling stock.
