Introduction
On September 8, 2025, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) initiated commercial operation of the new Stadler metro train on Line U2. This launch is part of a contract with Stadler for the delivery of up to 140 new carriages by the end of the year, aimed at increasing reliability and capacity on the Berlin U-Bahn.
Launch Event and Attendees
The launch event took place at Deutsche Oper station. Attendees included BVG CEO Henrik Falk, Franziska Giffey (Chair of the BVG Supervisory Board), Chief HR Officer Jenny Zeller-Grothe, Kai Wegner (Governing Mayor of Berlin), Ute Bonde (Senator for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment), and Jure Mikolčić (CEO of Stadler Germany).
Operational Improvements and Strategy
Prior to the launch, the new trains underwent thorough testing, certification, and operational preparations, including training for drivers and maintenance staff over several months. Modernizing the fleet aligns with BVG’s “Stability before Growth” strategy, which aims to restore reliability levels to 99% in the coming years. These new trains are expected to enhance technical performance, interior design, information systems, and accessibility.
Contract Details and Fleet Renewal
The framework agreement with Stadler includes up to 1,500 new carriages to be delivered by 2035, with a total contract volume of up to EUR 3 billion. To date, 484 carriages have been ordered from two sister series: JK trains for lines U1 – U4 and J train for lines U5–U9. The new trains are funded by the State of Berlin as part of its public transport contract with BVG. The broader J-series for lines U5 to U9 is currently in the testing phase and is expected to enter passenger service next summer.
New Train Features
The new Stadler metro train is designated “JK.” For the first time in ten years, BVG is introducing a new model specifically designed for the narrower-profile lines U1 to U4.
Conclusion
The new Stadler metro train is now in commercial operation on Line U2 as part of a larger contract for up to 140 new carriages, representing the largest fleet renewal in BVG’s history, with up to 1,500 carriages planned by 2035. The project, funded by the State of Berlin, aims to improve reliability and passenger experience on the U-Bahn.
