Metro Tunnel: Melbourne Rail Expansion Advancements & Future

Introduction

In February 2024, the Victorian Government announced the completion of the final tunneling for the Metro Tunnel project in Melbourne, Australia. This milestone marks a significant step forward for the project, which involves the construction of twin 9-kilometer rail tunnels and five new underground stations.

Metro Tunnel Project Completion

The final breakthrough occurred on February 27, 2024, at the State Library Station, linking the eastern and western tunnel sections. The project, initiated in 2017, has involved extensive tunneling operations beneath the city of Melbourne. The Metro Tunnel project is expected to increase the capacity of the city’s rail network, allowing for more frequent services.

Tunneling Details and Infrastructure

The twin tunnels, each 9 kilometers long, were excavated using four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). These TBMs, named Joan, Meg, Millie, and Alice, have collectively excavated approximately 18 kilometers of tunnels. The project also includes the construction of five new underground stations: North Melbourne, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall, and Anzac. These stations are designed to integrate with the existing metropolitan rail network.

Financial and Operational Aspects

The Metro Tunnel project is a significant infrastructure investment by the Victorian Government. The project aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of Melbourne’s public transport system. The project is designed to create additional capacity for over 500,000 passengers daily.
