Contract Details and Production Sites

The contract encompasses the design and manufacture of eight four-car trains. Production is taking place at Škoda Group’s sites in Pilsen and Ostrava. The first vehicle is set to be transported to Sofia in November, with the entire order expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Škoda Group anticipates finishing the project between March and April 2026.

Technical Specifications and Features

The 80-metre Škoda trains are designed to operate in warmer conditions, featuring high-capacity air-conditioning systems. Each train includes two dedicated wheelchair spaces for accessibility. The trains are equipped with an automatic speed control system. They are powered by three-phase asynchronous traction motors and incorporate regenerative braking, operating on standard-gauge track with a third rail at 750 V DC. The maximum speed is 90 km/h.

Testing and Delivery Schedule

The first train is undergoing type and test runs at the Velim test circuit in the Czech Republic. The second unit has completed Factory Acceptance Testing. Delivery of the first train to Sofia is scheduled for early November 2025.

Design and Passenger Experience

The trains are designed with a focus on energy efficiency, incorporating regenerative braking to reduce electricity consumption. The interior features fully air-conditioned, walk-through cars. The design includes wide doors, high-capacity standing areas, and ergonomically arranged seating for over 580 passengers, with around 120 seats.

Background and Project Significance

Since 2010, Škoda Group has delivered 210 trolleybuses to five Bulgarian cities. Sofia’s metro carries approximately 400,000 passengers daily. The new trains are intended to increase capacity and improve comfort and accessibility.
