Türasaş Rolls Out Domestic Rolling Stock, Marking a New Era for Turkish Railways

In a move signaling Turkey’s ambition to become a global railway power, Türasaş, the national rail vehicle manufacturer, has delivered a substantial order of domestically-produced rolling stock to TCDD Taşımacılık, the Turkish State Railways passenger and freight operator. Unveiled at a recent handover ceremony, the deliveries include electric locomotives, electric multiple units (EMUs), freight wagons, and specialized fire-fighting vehicles, all designed and manufactured with indigenous expertise. This initiative is a key component of Turkey’s broader strategy to foster national production across critical sectors. This article explores the advancements in Turkey’s railway sector, focusing on the new rolling stock, the drive for self-sufficiency, and the implications for the future of the Turkish rail industry.

The recent deliveries, spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, mark a significant leap forward for Turkey’s railway sector, as the nation aims to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains and cultivate a fully domestic industrial ecosystem. The “who” is Türasaş and TCDD Taşımacılık, the “what” is newly manufactured rolling stock, the “when” is ongoing with key deliveries happening in the past year and future years, the “where” is Turkey and its rail network, the “why” is to advance domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and the “how” is through the utilization of home-grown expertise and expanding the infrastructure.

E5000 Electric Locomotive: A Technological Triumph

The centerpiece of the recent deliveries is the E5000 electric locomotive, the first mainline electric locomotive designed and manufactured in Turkey. This achievement, developed under a contract signed in spring 2024, highlights Türasaş’s engineering prowess. The E5000’s design incorporates critical components such as the traction converter, traction control unit, central control unit, and traction transformer, all of which are key technologies, and previously only produced by advanced economies. These locomotives, rated at 5 megawatts of power and boasting a top speed of 140 km/h, are suitable for both freight and passenger services. The E5000s have received EU Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) certification, enabling their deployment on international routes. Delivery of the first five E5000 locomotives has already begun, with a further 15 scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025. An additional 30 units will follow in 2026, and the final 45 units will be delivered in 2027, completing the order of 95 locomotives. This progressive delivery schedule underscores the government’s confidence in Türasaş’s production capacity and commitment to expand the Turkish rail network.

Expanding the EMU Fleet for Enhanced Passenger Services

Alongside the E5000 locomotives, the expansion of the EMU fleet is another important aspect of the delivery. The existing fleet of EMUs, capable of speeds up to 160 km/h, is operating on the Adapazarı–Gebze route. In 2023, three of these domestically produced EMUs were introduced and, by the end of May 2025, an additional two EMUs were delivered, bringing the total to five trainsets. Türasaş plans to produce 22 more EMUs this year, with a further 17 units scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026, increasing the total EMU fleet to 53 by 2030. This planned expansion of the EMU fleet demonstrates a commitment to improving passenger transport capacity and enhancing the overall passenger experience.

High-Speed Rail and Shunting Locomotive Advancements

The commitment to advanced rail technology continues with the production of the first national high-speed train, designed for speeds up to 225 km/h, which began in February. Between 2026 and 2028, 14 more high-speed trainsets will be produced. Furthermore, Türasaş has also delivered a battery-powered shunting locomotive to TCDD Taşımacılık. This zero-emission locomotive is intended for operations in stations, depots, and terminals. Its use underscores the commitment to environmentally friendly and cost-effective operations. The first serial production run includes six units currently under construction. These moves demonstrate a broader vision of advancing railway capabilities.

Specialized Rolling Stock for Enhanced Safety: Fire-Fighting Wagon

The deliveries also incorporate specialized rolling stock, including a fire extinguishing and rescue wagon designed to respond to emergencies effectively. The wagon is designed for swift and effective responses, particularly during the transport of oil and hazardous materials. The wagon, which features a water tank capacity of 92 tonnes and a foam capacity of 4 cubic meters, was developed in collaboration with 100 local suppliers. This focus on safety and emergency preparedness reflects a comprehensive approach to railway operations.

Conclusion

The ongoing delivery of Turkish-made rolling stock to TCDD Taşımacılık marks a pivotal moment for the Turkish railway sector, signifying not only technological advancement but also a significant step towards industrial self-reliance. The E5000 electric locomotive, coupled with the expansion of the EMU fleet and the introduction of high-speed trains and specialized equipment, showcases Turkey’s ambition to become a leader in rail technology and manufacturing. The government’s strategic focus on domestic production, as articulated by Minister Uraloğlu, is aimed at creating a fully integrated railway ecosystem and eliminating dependence on foreign supply chains, with an emphasis on shaping technology with its own capabilities. The successful completion of the E5000 locomotive order and the continued expansion of the EMU fleet will further strengthen the Turkish railway network and improve passenger and freight transportation capabilities. The ambition to domestically produce all rail vehicle components within the next three years underscores the long-term vision for the Turkish railway industry. This focus on independence, technological advancement, and international recognition suggests a bright future for the Turkish railway industry, both in terms of domestic operations and international market potential.
