Stadler to Supply Battery-Powered FLIRT Trains to Denmark’s Lokaltog for Sustainable Mobility
The new trains, scheduled for delivery in 2028, will operate on the Tølløsebanen and Østbanen lines, with potential extensions to Lollandsbanen and Odsherredsbanen.

Danish railway operator Lokaltog has chosen Stadler’s FLIRT Akku battery-powered trains to decarbonize its fleet in Zealand, Denmark. The contract includes the purchase of 14 trains, with an option for an additional ten vehicles, marking a significant step toward sustainable and eco-friendly mobility in the region. The new trains, scheduled for delivery in 2028, will operate on the Tølløsebanen and Østbanen lines, with potential extensions to Lollandsbanen and Odsherredsbanen.
The FLIRT Akku trains are designed to provide an environmentally friendly travel experience, capable of operating both with and without overhead contact lines. They recharge during operation and braking, making them highly efficient and versatile. Dr. Ansgar Brockmeyer, Stadler’s Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable mobility, noting that Denmark’s low track electrification makes it a prime candidate for decarbonization through battery-powered trains.
The two-unit FLIRT Akku trains are fully compliant with TSI PRM requirements, ensuring accessibility for all passengers, including those with reduced mobility. Key features include low-floor entry, wide doors with automatic gap bridges, designated spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles, and a semi-automatic ramp for wheelchair users. Additionally, the trains will offer air conditioning, WLAN, and a modern passenger information system. Notably, a Stadler FLIRT Akku train set a world record in 2021 by traveling 224 kilometers in battery-only mode, a feat recognized by the Guinness Book of Records.
