Stadler Secures $155m Contract to Supply Custom Rack Trains for TPC in Switzerland
Stadler has secured a CHF140 million ($155.5 million) contract from Swiss transportation company Transports Publics du Chablais (TPC) to supply 13 custom-built rack and pinion adhesion trains. This investment, which includes the cost of the trains and a reserve parts deal, is a significant step in modernizing the Aigle-Leysin and Bex-Villars-Bretaye railway lines.

The new rack railway rolling stock is scheduled for delivery in early 2028, with commercial operations set to begin in September of the same year. Christophe Genoud, Head of TPC’s Passenger Transport Department, stated, “This order represents the final stage in the renewal of TPC’s rail fleet, following the replacement of rolling stock on the Aigle-Ollon-Monthey-Champéry lines in 2016 and the Aigle-Sepey-Diablerets line in 2024. The procurement is part of a broader project to develop our infrastructure, including the extension of the Aigle-Leysin line to the foot of the ski lifts.”
Each train will feature 112 seats, large panoramic windows, and a total capacity of approximately 250 passengers. The design includes a low entry height of 350mm, making it accessible for individuals with reduced mobility and families with strollers, in compliance with the Disability Equality Act. Passengers will also benefit from increased space for luggage, bicycles, and skis, as well as an enhanced passenger information system.
The trains are equipped with higher operating power for a smoother ride and incorporate energy recovery systems during descents to optimize energy efficiency. Christian Konig, Deputy Head of Marketing and Sales at Stadler, highlighted the trains’ versatility, stating, “The vehicles are designed for gradients of up to 23% and tight curves, which are common on the historic TPC network. They can switch between rack and pinion and adhesion modes, allowing them to operate like trams in the city traffic of Aigle and Bex.”
This contract underscores Stadler’s expertise in developing specialized rolling stock for challenging terrains and its commitment to enhancing passenger comfort and accessibility. The new trains will not only improve the travel experience but also support TPC’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and meet the growing demands of its passengers.
