RailPulse Launches National Railcar Telematics Platform to Boost Freight Efficiency and Safety

A coalition of major rail industry players, including railroads, car lessors, and shippers, has launched RailPulse, a groundbreaking telematics platform designed to revolutionize freight rail operations in the U.S. The system provides real-time data on railcar location, load status, door positions, handbrake activity, and impact detection, enhancing safety and operational efficiency across North America.
Developed over four years—with two years dedicated to design and testing—the platform aggregates sensor data from railcars and delivers insights via a web portal and APIs. Funded in part by the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration’s CRISI grant and PennDOT, RailPulse aims to streamline supply chains and reduce manual oversight.
David Shannon, RailPulse General Manager, emphasized its vendor-neutral, open ecosystem: “This technology transforms rail logistics by offering unprecedented visibility into fleet conditions, accelerating decision-making, and driving economic growth.” Board Chair Mike McClellan (Norfolk Southern) added that cross-industry collaboration ensures “visibility and safety for the entire rail network.”
