The Siemens Mobility Charger locomotives, derived from the European Vectron platform, will primarily operate using electricity from overhead catenary wires. However, they will seamlessly switch to battery mode when navigating sections of track around Penn Station, where the electrical systems differ. This innovative approach ensures continuous, efficient service while reducing reliance on traditional diesel power.
Pending approval from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) board, Metro-North plans to acquire 13 of these battery- and electric-powered locomotives. This acquisition, facilitated through an option on an existing contract with Siemens Mobility North America, underscores the MTA’s commitment to green technology. These locomotives will operate with coach cars, providing a flexible and environmentally friendly transportation solution.
