LA Metro Secures $893M Federal Grant to Revive San Fernando Valley Light Rail After 70 Years
The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) has been awarded

An 893 million federal grant to advance the East San Fernando Valley LightRail Transit 57 billion initiative to reintroduce commuter rail services to the region after a 70-year absence. The 6.7-mile light rail line will connect Van Nuys to Pacoima, providing critical transit access to underserved communities.
Funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Expedited Project Delivery Pilot Program, the grant accelerates infrastructure development for new fixed-guideway projects. LA Metro and LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn emphasized the project’s transformative potential, stating it will enhance mobility for thousands of residents, particularly in areas where 19% of households depend on public transit.
Construction is set to begin later this year, with the first phase featuring 11 stations linking to the Van Nuys Metrolink station. A northern extension is under study. Services are anticipated to launch in 2031, marking a milestone in regional connectivity. Congressman Tony Cárdenas highlighted the project’s broader impact, calling it a “commitment to uplift families through improved access to jobs, education, and essential services.”
