Introduction

In September 2022, the consortium comprising Siemens Mobility, Thales, and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) was awarded a contract by RFI for the design and implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in Italy, specifically on the high-speed line between Rome and Naples. This project is valued at €1.4 billion.

Project Scope and Timeline

The contract involves the installation of ERTMS Level 2 technology along the 220 km railway line. This includes the design, supply, and commissioning of the ERTMS system. The project is scheduled to be completed within 48 months, with an option for an additional 12 months for maintenance. The project is divided into three lots: Lot 1 covers the Rome-Frosinone section, Lot 2 focuses on the Frosinone-Caserta section, and Lot 3 addresses the Caserta-Naples section.

Consortium Responsibilities

Siemens Mobility is responsible for providing the ERTMS onboard units for the trains, as well as the interlocking systems and the operational control center. Thales will supply the trackside ERTMS equipment, including the radio block centers (RBCs). RFI, as the infrastructure manager, will oversee the overall project, integrate the systems, and manage the civil works.

Financial Details and Procurement

The total value of the contract is €1.4 billion. The project is co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The procurement process was conducted through a public tender by RFI. The contract includes provisions for maintenance services.

Strategic Significance

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to upgrade the Italian railway network with ERTMS, which aims to enhance safety, increase capacity, and improve interoperability. The Rome-Naples high-speed line is a key corridor in Italy, and the ERTMS implementation will significantly contribute to the modernization of the railway infrastructure. These railway projects are essential for the evolution of transportation.

Conclusion

The consortium of Siemens Mobility, Thales, and RFI is set to implement the ERTMS Level 2 system on the Rome-Naples high-speed line. The project, valued at €1.4 billion, is expected to be completed within 48 months, with an option for an additional 12 months for maintenance. The project is co-financed by the European Union and aims to modernize the Italian railway network.
