Introduction

Nexrail has ordered up to 200 EURO9000 panto-battery hybrid locomotives from Stadler. The locomotives, designed for freight transport, are planned for first deliveries in 2029.

Hybrid Locomotive Order

Nexrail, a rolling stock lessor based in Luxembourg, placed an order for up to 200 EURO9000 panto-battery hybrid locomotives from Stadler. The EURO9000 battery-bimodal locomotive combines up to 9MW of pantograph power with 1.2MW of high-performance battery power. The first deliveries are planned for 2029.

Features and Benefits

The EURO9000 is designed to be the first mainline corridor locomotive to offer zero-emission transport from terminal to terminal. The smart battery module enables brake energy storage, peak shaving, and energy trading. The locomotive’s tractive effort and power capabilities allow for single-traction operation on challenging terrain, including trans-alpine corridors. On weak DC networks, the battery can boost the locomotive, improving performance and train paths.

Smart Battery Management

The smart battery management system optimizes savings from regenerative braking, network peak consumption charges, and arbitrage of cost volatility by timing energy purchase and recuperation. These features are intended to make the EURO9000 more affordable to operate and more versatile than other models.

Technical Specifications and Deployment

The EURO9000 panto-battery hybrid locomotives are built on Stadler Valencia’s EURO9000 six-axle Co’Co’ platform design. Its multi-system architecture ensures seamless cross-border operation between Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy. Hamburger Rail Service Gmbh & Co. KG (HRS) is the launching customer.

Conclusion

The Stadler EURO9000 offers a combination of flexible traction on-and-off the catenary, high tractive effort for heavy loads, and zero-emission operation. The order from Nexrail includes up to 200 locomotives, with first deliveries scheduled for 2029. Hamburger Rail Service Gmbh & Co. KG (HRS) is the launching customer.
