Spanish railcar manufacturer Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) has signed a €113m contract with Rome City Council to supply 15 six-car trains for the Rome metro, as well as their maintenance for five years.

The new trains will be operated on 22.2km Line B between Laurentina and Rebibbia, the 4km B1 line from Bologna to Conca D’Oro and on a 1.1km extension to Ionio, which is scheduled to begin services in 2013.

CAF has already supplied 53 trains to Rome Metro since the company signed an initial contract in 2002; locomotives have been deployed on lines A, B and the Roma – Lido line.

Rome Metro’s new six-car trains are built with aluminium body shells, with four motored cars and two driving trailers, and cabbed cars on both ends.

CAF is currently delivering eight Civity EMUs for regional services around Trieste, five tilting DMUs to Sardinia and 250 bogies for the Milan metro. The company also signed a contract with Comune di Roma in 2001 to supply 45 six-coach trains.

Each train is designed to carry 210 sitting passengers and 992 standing passengers and has a continuous hallway to allow passengers to walk the length of the train.

The trains are equipped with a public address system and destination indicators, air conditionate, fire auto-diagnose, detection and extinction, antimounting, black box, videosecurity system, analogical radiotelephony, ATP, TWC and DABA accurate stop system.

The Rome order follows the selection of CAF by Finland’s Helsinki City Transport (HKL) for the supply of 20 four-car metro trains for €140m.
