Aecom to Lead Design for $3.57bn East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project
Aecom has been selected as the lead designer for Phase II of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (Metro) $3.57 billion East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project. As part of the San Fernando Transit Constructors joint venture, Aecom will manage the final design of the 6.7-mile light rail line, which includes 11 stations along Van Nuys Boulevard, one of the busiest corridors in the San Fernando Valley.

The East San Fernando Valley LRT Project is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving public transit in the San Fernando Valley area of California. The light rail line will connect the communities of Van Nuys, Panorama City, Arleta, and Pacoima, providing a new, efficient transit option for residents. The project will feature at-grade light rail tracks and create vital connections with regional transit services such as Metrolink, Amtrak, and various Metro lines. The project is expected to be completed by 2031.
Aecom’s responsibilities will include overseeing the design integration for multiple facilities and utilizing 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) to optimize design efficiency and constructability. Matt Crane, Chief Executive of Aecom’s US West region, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “We are proud to support this landmark project, which will meet growing demands for public transit in the region. For over a decade, our transportation experts have played a critical role in delivering Southern California’s ambitious transit objectives.”
In addition to the light rail line, the project will bring comprehensive street improvements to enhance accessibility and safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. A new 22-acre maintenance and storage facility is also planned, featuring solar-powered systems with excess power storage capabilities. This facility reflects the project’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and energy efficiency.
The East San Fernando Valley LRT Project represents a significant step forward in addressing the region’s transportation needs while promoting environmental sustainability. By providing a reliable and eco-friendly transit option, the project aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and enhance the quality of life for residents in the San Fernando Valley.
