GoVolta to Disrupt European Rail: Direct Amsterdam-Paris Route

Dutch newcomer GoVolta is set to disrupt the European rail market in 2026 with ambitious plans for low-cost, high-frequency direct services from Amsterdam to key international cities, including Berlin, Hamburg, and Paris. The company aims to emulate the success of low-cost airlines by offering affordable fares, guaranteed seating, and a streamlined booking process, challenging established operators from its inception.

The freshly established Dutch railway company, GoVolta, is poised to make a significant impact on the European rail landscape. Beginning in 2026, the operator will launch direct international routes connecting Amsterdam with Berlin and Hamburg, followed by a Paris service from December 2026. This strategic move is underpinned by a commitment to a business model heavily inspired by the low-cost airline sector, promising competitive pricing, simplified booking procedures, and the assurance of guaranteed seats for every passenger. This approach seeks to address a key barrier to rail travel, as highlighted by GoVolta co-founder Maarten Bastian: “Many people would take the train, but end up flying or driving because it’s too expensive or too complicated.” GoVolta’s vision is to “make things simple: affordable tickets, guaranteed seats, and ready-made city breaks.”

Initially, GoVolta’s operations will consist of two routes running three times a week. By the summer of 2026, the frequency of these services is slated to increase to daily operations. The Amsterdam to Berlin journey is projected to take approximately seven hours, with the rolling stock operating at a maximum speed of 160 km/h. To facilitate these ambitious plans, GoVolta has acquired 13 wagons, originally built in 1987 by SNCB/NMBS, for approximately one million euros. A further two million euros are earmarked for the modernization of this rolling stock.

Strategic Impact

GoVolta’s entry into the international rail market signifies a direct challenge to established operators, with low prices identified as the primary competitive weapon. Co-founder Hessel Winkelman asserts, “We need low prices to attract people to the train.” This strategy is designed to capture passengers currently opting for cars, buses, or planes, as well as those who might otherwise forgo travel due to cost constraints. The company’s ambition extends beyond its initial routes; GoVolta has already notified Dutch authorities of its intent to expand its network to include Frankfurt, Munich, Copenhagen, Bruges, and Basel, alongside increased frequencies on existing connections. This aggressive expansion plan underscores a clear intent to reshape passenger mobility across Europe.

Operational Details

To enhance passenger experience and efficiency, GoVolta will deploy trains comprising 11 wagons, offering approximately 820 seats. A dedicated lounge wagon will provide amenities such as drinks, snacks, and light meals, aiming to attract a broader demographic of travellers. Strict luggage policies, limiting passengers to two small pieces of luggage with additional items requiring prior reservation, are intended to mitigate crowding and ensure a smoother journey. GoVolta will manage the product development, timetables, and on-board staff, while Keolis Nederland will handle the operational aspects, including drivers, planning, and daily train management. Brouwer Technology will be responsible for the technical upkeep and maintenance of the rolling stock, creating a robust operational framework designed for rapid European expansion.
