Introduction

Siemens Mobility has contracted with Trivia Trens S.A. to modernize three commuter rail lines in São Paulo using Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over ETCS Level 2, covering 140 kilometers of track and 46 stations.

Project Scope and Technology

The project encompasses lines 11-Coral, 12-Sapphire, and 13-Jade. The deployment will deliver a digital signaling and control system. Siemens Mobility will design, supply, install, and commission a complete signaling system, including an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATS), modern interlocking systems, Radio Block Centre (RBC), and associated trackside equipment.

Rolling Stock and Equipment

More than 130 vehicles will be equipped with Siemens’ Trainguard ETCS on-board units. This includes 107 trains, six MRS locomotives, three TRIVIA locomotives, and 17 auxiliary vehicles. The agreement also includes a two-year warranty and the provision of spare parts.

Technology Integration

ATO over ETCS combines ETCS Level 2 and ATO. ETCS Level 2 ensures continuous supervision and control of train movements via digital radio communication. The ATO system automates driving functions, such as acceleration, braking, and station stops, achieving Grade of Automation (GoA) Level 2.

Operational and Environmental Benefits

This integration aims to optimize headways, improve journey smoothness, and increase service frequency while maintaining safety standards. Energy-efficient driving algorithms are expected to reduce energy consumption and peak power demand. The modular architecture enables future system upgrades.
