UIC 567-2: Standard Z-Type Coaches | High-Comfort Specs & 200 km/h Design

Detailed technical guide to UIC 567-2 Standard Z-Type Coaches. Covers mandatory requirements for air conditioning, noise insulation limits (<65 dB), and 200 km/h running gear specifications. Essential reading for understanding EuroCity rolling stock standards and international interoperability.

1. Introduction: The “EuroCity” Standard (Type Z)

UIC 567-2 defines the specific characteristics of Standard Z-Type Coaches. Introduced to replace the older X and Y types, the Z-Type represents a paradigm shift in passenger comfort and operational speed.

Unlike its predecessors, a coach can only be classified as “Type Z” if it meets strict criteria regarding sound insulation, climate control, and suitability for speeds of at least 160 km/h (upgradeable to 200 km/h). These vehicles form the backbone of international EuroCity (EC) networks.

2. Dimensional and Structural Characteristics

The standard mandates a uniform architecture to ensure seamless coupling in international consists.

  • Length over Buffers: Strictly 26.40 meters. This extended length allows for spacious compartments or high-capacity open saloons without compromising legroom.
  • Body Width: 2.825 meters, maximizing the loading gauge (UIC 505-1) for shoulder room.
  • Crashworthiness: The chassis must withstand high longitudinal compression loads (typically 2000 kN) to protect passengers in the event of a collision.

3. Key Comfort Technologies (The “Z” Differentiators)

The definition of a Z-Type coach is heavily tied to passenger experience technologies defined in Chapter 5.

SystemType Z Requirement (UIC 567-2)Impact on Operation
HVAC (Climate Control)Mandatory. Unlike Type X, Z-Type coaches must have full air-conditioning, not just heating.Windows are generally sealed/locked to maintain thermal efficiency. Requires high-power energy supply (UIC 550).
Acoustic InsulationInterior noise must be < 65 dB(A) at 160 km/h.Requires “Floating Floor” structures and double-glazed safety glass to dampen track noise.
Door SystemPlug-Sliding Doors with remote closing and locking (TB0/LAT).Ensures an airtight seal against pressure waves when passing other trains at 200 km/h.
Toilet SystemClosed-loop system (CET) preferred/mandated in later revisions.Enables operation in environmentally sensitive areas and stations.

4. Running Gear and Speed Capabilities

To achieve the authorized speed of 200 km/h, UIC 567-2 mandates the use of advanced bogies (typically referencing designs like the Fiat Y0270S or MD52 series).

  • Braking Performance: Must be equipped with high-performance disc brakes and, in many cases, Magnetic Track Brakes (Mg) to adhere to the stopping distances defined in UIC 544-1.
  • Ride Comfort (Werz Index): The suspension must ensure a ride comfort index (N_MV) of less than 2.5, ensuring smooth travel even on older tracks.

5. Interior Layout Configurations

The standard allows for flexible interior arrangements while fixing the compartment sizes:

  • 1st Class (Az): Typically 9 compartments with side corridors.
  • 2nd Class (Bz): 11 compartments or equivalent open-plan seating.
  • Service Zones: Dedicated areas for train crew and catering trolleys are integrated into the vestibules.
Maintenance Note: For Z-Type coaches, the pressure-tight sealing of gangways and doors is a critical inspection point (Check Sheet 567-Z). Failure in seals leads to “ear-popping” discomfort for passengers during tunnel entries.
