Bridge Replacement and Station Upgrades

The closure facilitated a major GBP 20 million (EUR 23 million) project to remove and rebuild a 67-year-old railway bridge over five lines south of Stockport station. Additionally, platform reconstruction occurred at Poynton station in Cheshire, and footbridge renovations took place at Longport station in Stoke-on-Trent.

Track and Infrastructure Improvements

Network Rail and its partners undertook various track-related improvements. These included track and points renewal in Macclesfield and at Stone station, along with track upgrades at Hixon, Stone, and Congleton. Drainage improvements were also carried out near Trentham.

Level Crossing and Viaduct Works

Level crossing upgrades were implemented at Meaford, Church Lane, and Aston-by-Stone crossings in Stone. Furthermore, waterproofing work was completed on the River Trent Viaduct in Stone.

Financial Investment and Broader Strategy

The total value of the work carried out by Network Rail and its partners on the WCML rail section exceeded GBP 43 million (EUR 49.7 million). These investments are part of a wider initiative to modernize the UK’s rail infrastructure and address future capacity requirements.
