In December 2023, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced over $1.5 billion in grants through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program. These grants will fund infrastructure projects across the country, including those related to railways and ports.

RAISE Program Funding

The RAISE program, established by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, is designed to support various transportation projects. The USDOT received over 1,000 applications, requesting approximately $14.6 billion, significantly exceeding the available funding. A total of 162 projects in 42 states and territories will receive funding.

Specific projects include a $24.7 million grant to the Port of Palm Beach in Florida for a rail expansion project. In addition, the Port of Longview in Washington will receive $22.2 million to rehabilitate a rail line. Another project is the $23.2 million award for improvements to the Port of Wilmington in Delaware. Further, the Port of South Louisiana will benefit from a $48.2 million grant for rail infrastructure upgrades.

Other projects receiving funding include: the City of Beaumont, Texas, which is to receive $20.9 million for a rail project; $25.5 million will go to the City of Charleston, South Carolina, for port improvements; and the City of Cleveland, Ohio, is to get $23.3 million for its project.
