Thailand Rail Expansion: SRT’s Signalling Project Enhances Connectivity
Joint venture awarded a contract for signalling and telecommunications on Thailand’s new railway project. This railway project boosts capacity and regional connectivity.
Introduction
A joint venture has been contracted to supply signalling and telecommunications for the second phase of a double-track railway project on the Khon Kaen–Nong Khai rail section of Thailand’s North Eastern Line. The project, approved by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), has a budget of approximately THB 29.7 billion (USD 915 million) and is scheduled for completion in 2028.
Signalling and Telecommunications Contract
The joint venture’s contract encompasses the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of advanced signalling and telecommunication systems. These systems will include a Traffic Management System, Computer-Based Interlocking, and European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1, applicable to both wayside and onboard applications.
Project Scope and Infrastructure
The project spans 167 km and includes 11 stations. It involves constructing a second track parallel to the existing metre-gauge line to increase capacity, speed, and safety. The project also includes 14 stations, four stops and three freight yards.
Traffic Projections
The line is projected to carry approximately 3,300 passengers daily in its first year of operation, increasing to 5,500 passengers per day by the 30th year. Freight traffic is expected to start at 3.3 million tonnes per year, potentially rising to 4.2 million tonnes annually.
Strategic Importance and Connectivity
The railway line is designed to connect with other key infrastructure, potentially linking to Laos and China, particularly benefiting freight transport and regional connectivity. This double-tracked section will enhance the transport link in Northeast Thailand, connecting Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, and Nong Khai.
Conclusion
The project involves the modernization and expansion of rail infrastructure by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The project, budgeted at THB 29.7 billion (USD 915 million), aims to improve transport links in Northeast Thailand and enhance regional connectivity.
