Introduction
Stadler delivered its 100th EURODUAL locomotive to European Loc Pool (ELP) in early September 2025. The dual-mode locomotive entered service with Havelländische Eisenbahn AG (HVLE), signifying a key achievement in sustainable freight transport collaboration.
Milestone Delivery
The handover of the landmark locomotive signifies a notable achievement for the EURODUAL platform. Its deployment with HVLE, the initial launch customer, highlights the enduring collaboration among the three entities.
Executive Statements
“With this 100th EURODUAL now entering service under ELP’s lease and HVLE’s operation, the concept has truly proven its worth. The locomotive has become the benchmark for dual-mode traction across Europe,” stated Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia. “We’re grateful for the vision and trust of our partners at ELP and HVLE in making dual-mode traction a widely adopted solution.”
“The 100th locomotive is far more than just a number for us, it represents the trust our customers place in us and the strength of our partnerships. Being able to celebrate this milestone together with HVLE fills us with great pleasure and pride,” said Willem Goosen, CEO of ELP.
Partnership and Fleet Growth
Since the 2019 framework agreement with Stadler, ELP has progressively expanded its hybrid fleet, encompassing both EURODUAL and EURO9000 locomotives. The 100th EURODUAL enhances ELP’s capacity to provide operators with adaptable leasing options for use on electrified main lines and non-electrified sections.
Locomotive Specifications and Capabilities
HVLE, Stadler’s first EURODUAL customer, signed a contract in 2017 for ten locomotives. The EURODUAL combines zero-emission electric traction with a diesel engine, enabling heavy-haul and shunting operations without additional locomotives. This dual capability facilitates seamless operations across mixed networks and aids in the transition to lower-carbon freight.
The locomotive provides 6.2 MW in electric mode and 2.8 MW in diesel mode, with up to 500 kN of tractive effort and a maximum speed of 120 km/h. It features ETCS signalling, three-axle bogies, remote monitoring, and predictive maintenance for reliability and efficiency.
Conclusion
The delivery of the 100th EURODUAL highlights the platform’s influence in reshaping European rail freight, providing a combination of performance, flexibility, and sustainability. This milestone also reflects the increasing demand for hybrid solutions as the industry shifts towards more sustainable and efficient transportation methods.
