Introduction

Škoda Group and RegioJet have finalized a CZK 9 billion (EUR 370 million) contract for the delivery of 34 Panter hybrid train units, designated as BEDMU type, set to commence service in December 2029.

Contract Details

Škoda Group is contracted to deliver 18 two-car and 16 three-car BEDMUs to RegioJet. The two-car units will measure 52.9 meters in length and offer 120 seats, including 10 in Business Class. The three-car units will be 79.4 meters long, with a total capacity of 197 seats, of which 16 are in Business Class.

Technical Specifications and Environmental Impact

The BEDMU trains are designed as battery-electric units, incorporating a diesel generator for extended range. They are aligned with the requirements of the Czech Ministry of Transport. These trains are designed to maximize the use of electric power, optimize the diesel powerpack, and utilize renewable HVO fuel (hydrotreated vegetable oil) to minimize environmental impact.

Operational Features and Systems

The new trains will operate on dual-system (3 kV DC, 25 kV AC) infrastructure and are equipped with advanced systems for energy consumption optimization and smooth mode transitions, considering timetables and track profiles. Remote monitoring will also be implemented to optimize maintenance and enhance operational reliability. The BDEMUs will feature internal and external camera systems, along with the ETCS.

Passenger Amenities

The trains will provide passengers with onboard vending machines, air conditioning, modern passenger information systems, Wi-Fi, and charging sockets. They will also offer level boarding, low-floor interiors, barrier-free toilets, and designated spaces for prams, bicycles, and wheelchairs.

Conclusion

The Panter hybrid train units are intended to offer efficient and environmentally friendly transport on key non-electrified routes in Northeast Bohemia. The trains are expected to save up to 19,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
