Introduction

Renfe hosted a Demo Day in Madrid to present six artificial intelligence projects developed under the first edition of its AI Laboratory. The event brought together technology firms, universities, and representatives from Spain’s digital and mobility sectors to review the projects, which were developed using operational data and real environments within Renfe.

Project Funding and Selection

More than 80 organizations participated in the call for proposals. Six projects were selected to develop Proofs of Concept (PoC). Each project received €20,000 in funding, along with technical support and access to the company’s systems and facilities.

Demo Day and Attendees

Renfe’s director general for Innovation, Sustainability and Digital Transformation attended the Demo Day. The event was also attended by members of the national technology ecosystem. The Demo Day strengthens Renfe’s position in public-private collaboration around digital innovation and smart mobility.

Project Focus

The selected PoCs focus on key challenges affecting operational efficiency, maintenance, customer experience, and safety.

AI Laboratory Objectives

The Demo Day marked the conclusion of the inaugural edition of Renfe’s AI Laboratory. The initiative aims to explore new technologies, identify opportunities for improvement, and support the progressive integration of AI across all areas of the business. The program has brought together universities, start-ups, and technology firms offering solutions with operational, social, and environmental impact.

Future Implementation

Following the evaluation of results, the most promising projects may progress to implementation and scaling phases, with the goal of integrating them into the company’s wider technological infrastructure.
