Introduction

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the opening of the next phase of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) light-rail network in Montreal last week. The new 19-mile extension adds 14 stations to the network, expanding service to nearly 31 miles and a total of 19 stations.

Expansion Overview

The REM project, extending from downtown Montreal to Deux-Montagnes, signifies a significant expansion of the public transit system. The fully electric system now connects the northern and southern shores to downtown Montreal, including stations on the island’s western side.

Project Scope and Impact

The REM is the largest public transit project undertaken in Quebec in the last 50 years. Upon full completion, the network will span nearly 42 miles and encompass 26 stations.

Future Connectivity

The completed network will include a connection from downtown Montreal to the international airport. The project aims to accommodate up to 170,000 users daily. It is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 100,000 metric tons annually, which is equivalent to removing 30,000 cars from the road each day. The train journey from downtown to the airport will take approximately 25 minutes.

Conclusion

The REM light-rail network in Montreal has expanded with the addition of a new 19-mile extension, adding 14 stations. This project represents a substantial investment in Quebec’s public transit system, with further expansion planned to reach the international airport and reduce environmental impact.
