The Port of Los Angeles has announced its fourth consecutive year of exceeding 10 million TEUs, processing 10,918,437 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in 2023. This milestone highlights the port’s continued strong performance despite global economic headwinds.
Annual Throughput Milestone
In 2023, the Port of Los Angeles processed a total of 10,918,437 TEUs. This marks the fourth consecutive year the port has surpassed the 10 million TEU threshold. The total cargo volume for the year reached 12,614,804 metric tons.
Cargo Breakdown
Of the total TEUs handled, 5,813,019 were loaded containers and 5,105,418 were discharged containers. The port also facilitated the movement of 1,179,976 empty containers.
Year-over-Year Comparison
While exceeding 10 million TEUs, the 2023 total represents a 4% decrease compared to the 2022 volume of 10,704,332 TEUs, and a 10.3% decrease compared to the record-setting 12,320,434 TEUs handled in 2021. However, it remains 2.8% ahead of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
Port Leadership Commentary
Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, Gene Seroka, stated that the port’s resilience in 2023 was driven by innovation and collaboration. He noted that while the total volume saw a slight decrease, the port remained a critical gateway for American commerce.
