Introduction

The Philippine government, in collaboration with GCash, has launched an open-loop ticketing system for the Metro Manila Metro Rail Transit System Line 3 (MRT-3). This initiative, involving the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), aims to advance the digital transformation of the country’s public transportation ticketing and introduce advanced payment solutions. The system will facilitate cashless payments through QR codes, mobile NFC, and debit/credit cards, offering commuters a faster and more convenient tap-in and tap-out process.

Expanded Payment Options on MRT-3

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced that this launch represents the initial phase in equipping all turnstile carousels with diverse payment functionalities. He further stated that digital payment solutions are planned for deployment on other rail lines, including Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2, as well as other mass transport systems.

Enhancing Station Connectivity

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda highlighted ongoing efforts to improve internet connectivity within MRT-3 stations. This enhancement is intended to ensure uninterrupted access to the GCash application for commuters.

Commuter Convenience and Digital Shift

GCash President and CEO Martha Sazon conveyed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the significant convenience it will provide to commuters. Previously, passengers faced lengthy queues for tickets, with some arriving as early as 4:30 AM.
