Introduction

ÖBB will launch two direct Railjet services on the Lienz – Vienna rail route to East Tyrol, commencing on 6 October 2025. With the Europe-wide timetable change on 14 December 2025, one of the Lienz–Vienna Railjet connections will feature one of ÖBB’s first fully modernized Railjet trainsets. The Koralm Railway will also officially open on 14 December 2025, reducing travel times between Lienz and Vienna.

New Railjet Services

Starting 6 October 2025, ÖBB will introduce two direct Railjet services on the Lienz – Vienna rail route. This will provide improved connectivity to East Tyrol.

Modernized Railjet Fleet

One of the Lienz–Vienna Railjet connections will be operated by a fully modernized Railjet trainset from the timetable change on 14 December 2025. Lienz will become the first city in Tyrol to be served by the upgraded Railjet.

Upgrades and Enhancements

ÖBB is modernizing its entire Railjet fleet, with all 60 trainsets scheduled for a full upgrade by the end of 2031, after over 15 years in service. The first refurbished unit will enter service in December 2025, including the Lienz–Vienna rail route. Upgrades include new seats in 1st and 2nd Class, as well as Business Class, additional USB charging ports, modern interior design with wood accents and high-back seats, larger folding tables, footrests, handrails, a new passenger information system, and improved pram storage areas.

Koralm Railway and Journey Time Reduction

The Koralm Railway will officially open on 14 December 2025. This new high-speed line will reduce journey times between Lienz and Vienna by 23 minutes, bringing the total journey time down to around 5 hours 19 minutes.
