Introduction

In 2026, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) will continue the modernization of the Franz Josef Railway, focusing on upgrades to Vienna Spittelau station and Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, a major railway terminus in Vienna, along with track and switch improvements. The project aims to enhance rail services for commuters by increasing reliability and comfort.

Upgrades to Stations

The renovation of Vienna Spittelau station will be a key part of the project. The station will be fully closed from March to June 2026 for the construction of a modern transport hub designed to meet high standards of comfort and safety. Simultaneously, the platform ceiling at Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof will be renovated from January to the end of June 2026. The platforms will be closed in phases to allow for the modernization work and to accommodate more passengers.

Track and Infrastructure Improvements

Approximately 2.5 km of new track will be laid, and ten switches will be replaced on the section between Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and Spittelau. This is a crucial step in preparing the line for future mobility needs. Between 2024 and 2033, ÖBB is modernizing the Franz Josef Railway to improve comfort, service frequency, and travel times. This includes expanding infrastructure between Vienna and Gmünd to allow for a continuous hourly service, or a half-hourly service during peak periods.

Timeline and Service Enhancements

The modernization and expansion of the Gmünd–Vienna line, including the installation of electronic interlockings, is scheduled for completion in 2028, enabling trains to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h on selected sections. Between 2028 and 2033, parts of the line will be newly built and electrified, providing the Horn District in Lower Austria with a direct connection to Vienna, expected to commence in 2031, subject to official approvals. Upgrades and double-track works are planned for sections north of Absdorf-Hippersdorf (2.5 km) and east of Irnfritz (4 km), with completion expected by mid-2033. The track layout at Hötzelsdorf-Geras station will also be adapted to improve train entry and exit times.

Expected Outcomes

The upgrades will increase line capacity and allow trains to operate without speed restrictions. Commuters will benefit from reduced travel times and more frequent connections, including a fast, direct service from Horn to Vienna.
