ÖBB Wels Terminal Expansion: Sustainable Rail Freight in Austria

Introduction

ÖBB has completed the new administration and in-gate building at the Wels terminal, a key freight handling hub in Austria. The new building, constructed with 1,000 m³ of timber and covering 1,400 m², is now operational as part of a larger expansion project.

Environmental Sustainability

The new administration and in-gate building at the Wels terminal exemplifies environmentally responsible construction practices. The building utilized 1,000 m³ of timber in its construction, which permanently sequesters approximately 1,000 tonnes of CO₂. Furthermore, the building incorporates modern energy technologies, including a 225 kWp photovoltaic system, radiant heating and cooling ceilings, heat pumps, and highly insulated components to ensure sustainable operation.

Operational and Functional Design

The new building provides modern workplaces, including training rooms, break areas, vending machines, and bicycle parking. Its layout is structured into three separate entrance areas for customs, drivers, and staff. The design prioritizes accessibility and clear pathways to create a modern working environment. Features such as a light-filled atrium with a maple tree, wood paneling, and spacious lounge areas enhance the work environment, while barrier-free design further supports the building’s commitment to sustainability.

Expansion Project Overview

By 2027, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), in collaboration with the European Union, will invest around EUR 68 million in the comprehensive Wels terminal expansion. The project is part of a strategy to strengthen rail freight transport and promote climate-friendly mobility. The overall project aims to transform the Wels terminal into a through-terminal, extending loading tracks and crane tracks, along with a direct connection to the Westbahn railway line. This will enable freight trains to access the terminal from both sides, eliminating time-consuming shunting operations.

Digitalization and Strategic Importance

The expansion also focuses on the digitalization of processes, with systems such as video gate technology and automated entry and exit processes. The Wels terminal is located on the Western Railway Line, part of the Rhine-Danube Corridor, and offers direct motorway access. Johann Pluy, Board Member of ÖBB-Infrastruktur, stated that the expansion will increase terminal capacity by around 40 percent without requiring additional land, thus supporting the shift of freight from road to rail.
