Introduction

King Mohammed VI of Morocco initiated several significant rail infrastructure projects in Casablanca, valued at MAD 20 billion (USD 2 billion). These projects are designed to enhance urban mobility within the metropolitan area.

Infrastructure Projects

The projects encompass the construction of three next-generation major stations and ten new proximity metropolitan train (TMP) stations. Additionally, five stations will be refurbished, and 260 km of new railway lines will be laid. The plan also includes constructing and widening 50 civil-engineering structures, establishing Zenata and Nouaceur technical centres and five maintenance workshops, and acquiring 48 new trains for local and regional services.

Financing and Scope

The total budget for these projects is MAD 96 billion (USD 9.6 billion). The Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) will finance 70% of the projects’ value, with the Casablanca Region contributing the remaining 30%.

Station Development

The three next-generation major stations, including the Casablanca-Sud station, will be integrated and high-performance structures. King Mohammed VI launched the construction works for the Casablanca-Sud station, marking the commencement of the rail investment projects.

Strategic Goals

These rail infrastructure projects aim to develop a sustainable regional transport system, improve daily mobility, and contribute to socio-economic and urban planning objectives, supporting national goals towards 2030. Furthermore, the programme supports the rail sector’s development, including the implementation of the 430 km Kenitra – Marrakech high-speed line, the enhancement of regional links between Kenitra and Casablanca, the improvement of mobility in the Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech conurbations, and the development of a new national rail-industry ecosystem.
