Irish Rail Western Region Upgrade: Sustainable Rail Future
Irish Rail launches Western region upgrade, boosting capacity and connectivity. Project spans 87 miles, aiming for reduced journey times.

Irish Rail Embarks on Ambitious Western Region Upgrade Project
Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) has launched a transformative project to modernize and expand rail infrastructure in the Western region, spanning an 87-mile (140-kilometer) route from Galway to Portarlington, with onward connections to Dublin. This ambitious endeavor, commencing now, aims to significantly enhance capacity, reduce journey times, and increase service frequency, ultimately improving connectivity for communities and businesses. The project’s core objective is to create a more efficient, sustainable, and passenger-friendly rail network. Engineering and design consultancy Jacobs will lead the project, undertaking pre-feasibility, feasibility, and preferred option selection phases for track capacity enhancements, decarbonization initiatives, and speed and service frequency increases. Funding for this significant infrastructure investment is provided under Project Ireland 2040, a key component of the National Development Plan 2018-2027, supported by the National Transport Authority.
Boosting Capacity and Performance
The primary goal of this project is to significantly increase the operational capacity of the Western rail line. This will involve a thorough assessment of existing infrastructure, including track geometry, signaling systems, and station layouts. Jacobs will explore options for additional track capacity, which may include the addition of passing loops, double-tracking sections, or implementation of advanced signaling systems such as European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). These capacity upgrades will be critical for accommodating increased service frequencies and passenger demand, facilitating more reliable and timely travel across the network. The planning phase will also involve detailed traffic modeling and simulations to optimize the network’s performance and minimize disruption during construction.
Decarbonization and Sustainable Rail Solutions
A core element of the modernization plan is the integration of sustainable practices and decarbonization strategies. Jacobs will be tasked with evaluating and proposing solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of the rail line. This will likely include the assessment of electrification options, the use of renewable energy sources to power the railway, and the adoption of energy-efficient rolling stock. Furthermore, the project will consider lifecycle environmental impact, evaluating the sustainability of materials used in construction and maintenance. The objective aligns directly with Ireland’s ambitious climate action targets, positioning rail as a key component in achieving a climate-neutral future and reducing reliance on private vehicles.
Enhancing Passenger Experience and Connectivity
The project aims to significantly improve the passenger experience, with considerations spanning all aspects of the journey, from station facilities to onboard services. This will involve modernizing stations, improving accessibility, and enhancing passenger information systems. The focus will be on creating comfortable and convenient travel for passengers, including features such as Wi-Fi, accessible seating, and real-time journey updates. The upgrade will also integrate with broader transportation networks, ensuring seamless connections with other modes of transport and improving connectivity across the region. Integrated transport planning, as well as stakeholder and community engagement, is crucial to ensure that the evolving transport needs of the region are effectively addressed.
Strategic Implementation and Future Outlook
The entire project is supported by a four-year framework agreement, with an option to extend for a further four years, highlighting the long-term strategic importance of the undertaking. The phased approach, encompassing comprehensive planning, detailed design, and rigorous environmental assessments, will ensure the project’s successful completion. This major investment will significantly enhance the rail network, reducing reliance on private cars and fostering sustainable mobility. The success of this project is also critical for driving further investment in public transportation and building a more environmentally sustainable and efficient transportation system in Ireland.
