Introduction

Ingeteam has secured a contract from Stadler to provide traction converters for 16 battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) that will operate on the Kamptalbahn line in Austria, with the option for up to 120 vehicles total. The BEMUs are designed to reach speeds up to 160 km/h (140 km/h under battery power).

Traction Converter Supply

Ingeteam will supply two roof-mounted, water-cooled traction converters for each train. These converters are designed for efficient and reliable operation on both electrified and non-electrified routes. The converters integrate key components, including the traction inverter, brake chopper, and line converter, into a compact design.

Power System Operation

The system utilizes dual power sources, drawing energy from overhead catenary systems (15 kV AC and 25 kV AC) or onboard batteries when operating on non-electrified track. The converters then transform the incoming power into the voltage and frequency required to drive the train’s traction motors, facilitating a seamless transition between power modes.

Testing and Production

Ingeteam will conduct traction system tests to validate performance. The trials will take place at the company’s Electromobility Laboratory using a customized setup. All traction converters will be manufactured at Ingeteam’s Ortuella (Bizkaia) facility in Spain, with deliveries scheduled to be completed by 2027. The company anticipates producing more than 90 converters of this configuration across multiple BEMU projects.

Strategic Impact

Ingeteam views the project as an important step in supporting sustainable and efficient transport technologies. The BEMU technology enables zero-emission operation on lines without full electrification, contributing to lower carbon emissions and maintaining network flexibility.
