Introduction

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has proposed a EUR 230 million loan for the Graz tram acquisition project, promoted by Holding Graz – Kommunale Dienstleistungen GmbH, with an eligible cost of EUR 473 million. The project involves the procurement of 49 light rail vehicles and the expansion of existing infrastructure in Graz, Austria.

Project Financing

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has proposed a loan of EUR 230 million for the Graz tram acquisition project. The total eligible cost of the project is EUR 473 million.

Project Scope

The Graz tram acquisition project encompasses several key components. It includes the procurement of 49 light rail vehicles, each approximately 34 metres long. Additionally, the project involves the extension of an existing tramway maintenance depot at Steyrergasse. A new storage area will be developed at Auer Welsbach Gasse to accommodate an additional 40 trams and expand the repair and maintenance workshop.

Fleet Procurement and Capacity

Holding Graz and Alstom have finalized a contract for the purchase and maintenance of 15 Flexity light rail vehicles. The new Flexity trams, manufactured by Alstom in Vienna, are 33.81 metres in length. These new vehicles are around six metres longer than the vehicles currently operating in Graz. The expanded design allows them to carry about 30% more passengers, accommodating up to 200 people, with 60 seats. Existing Variobahn units hold 145 passengers, while the Cityrunner models offer space for 142.

Operational Impact

The first Flexity tram has been presented by Holding Graz. The entire fleet is expected to enter regular service, increasing passenger capacity in Graz by 30%. This will contribute to a reduction in congestion in the city centre. The new Flexity fleet is designed to speed up boarding and alighting, which should ease pressure on public transport in central Graz.
