EIB Evaluates €300M Barcelona Rail Line Funding: FGC Project

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is evaluating a significant €300 million financing proposal to support the construction of a vital 4.1 km underground suburban railway line in Barcelona. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), aims to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times for millions of commuters.

The proposed new underground section will extend Barcelona’s suburban line No. 8, directly connecting the Plaça Espanya area to the Gràcia district, a critical north-western corridor. This development involves constructing 4.1 kilometers of new tunnel and two strategically located stations near the Hospital Clínic and Francesc Macià, facilitating improved access to central Barcelona. The project’s financing analysis by the EIB underscores its strategic importance for regional public transport infrastructure.

Strategic Impact

This €300 million contract, awarded in 2023 to a consortium including Ferrovial, Sacyr, Copisa, and Copcisa, represents a significant investment in Barcelona’s public transport network. Upon completion in 2028, the Llobregat-Anoia line extension will integrate seamlessly with the FGC network, promising substantial reductions in travel times by eliminating the need for passengers to change trains. This upgrade is designed to bolster connectivity from the Llobregat–Anoia metric gauge railway corridor, also known as Metro Line 8, and enhance overall public transport accessibility, particularly for residents in the eastern Eixample district.

The FGC will operate the new line, which is poised to become a crucial artery for commuters and potentially freight traffic on sections of the metric gauge network. Beyond the direct extension, the project will strengthen intermodal connections with Barcelona’s existing tram and metro systems, as well as other suburban rail lines.
