Introduction

In May 2017, the operator of the Port of Duisburg (Duisport) and DB Cargo signed a cooperation agreement to increase the volume of combined transport and to establish new connections for freight transport by rail. The project aims to improve the efficiency of freight transport through the port.

Cooperation Agreement

The cooperation agreement between Duisport and DB Cargo was signed in May 2017. The goal was to increase the volume of combined transport. The agreement also aimed to establish new connections for freight transport by rail. A key objective was to improve the efficiency of freight transport through the Port of Duisburg.

Infrastructure Investments

Duisport invested €100 million in infrastructure expansion and modernization. This included the construction of the “Duisburg Gateway Terminal” (DGT) with a handling capacity of 850,000 standard containers per year. The DGT, a joint venture between Duisport, Hupac, and the Swiss company, Contargo, was expected to be operational in the second half of 2024. In 2019, Duisport handled a total of 3.6 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units).

Rail Transport Expansion

DB Cargo aimed to increase its rail freight volume through the Port of Duisburg. In 2021, DB Cargo transported 23.3 million tonnes of goods in combined transport. The company planned to increase the number of train departures from Duisburg, including connections to the Benelux countries and Italy. The aim was to expand the network to include Scandinavia and Southeastern Europe.

Locomotive Deployment

To support the increased rail transport volume, DB Cargo utilized Bombardier Traxx locomotives. These locomotives played a key role in expanding the network and improving transport efficiency.

Conclusion

The cooperation between Duisport and DB Cargo, initiated in May 2017, focused on increasing combined transport volume and establishing new rail freight connections. Investments in infrastructure by Duisport, such as the Duisburg Gateway Terminal, and DB Cargo’s expansion of its rail freight services, were central to achieving these objectives.
