Czech Republic Modernizes Rail: ETCS Rollout & Infrastructure Upgrades

The Czech Republic’s railway network is undergoing significant modernization and digital transformation with the introduction of a new train timetable on December 14, highlighted by an expansion of exclusive European Train Control System (ETCS) operations and infrastructure upgrades across key corridors. ETCS Rollout Accelerates on Key Corridors

The new timetable marks a substantial leap forward in the deployment of the European Train Control System (ETCS) within the Czech Republic. Exclusive ETCS operation will now cover an additional nearly 30 kilometers on the vital Prague to Kralupy nad Vltavou corridor, a route accommodating over 200 trains daily and crucial for international rail traffic. This expansion aligns with the National Plan for the Implementation of the New Digital System, with transport operators having had approximately five years to adapt. Concurrently, the busy route between Brno and Zastávka u Brna will also see the activation of ETCS alongside the new timetable, further integrating the unified European signaling system into the national network.

Beyond the digital advancements, the December 14 timetable introduces tangible improvements for passengers and operational efficiency. A new platform is set to open at Jihlava Město station, facilitating improved passenger access. In Tábor, trains will once again traverse the rebuilt bridge over the Lužnice River, marking the completion of significant structural repairs. Further enhancing passenger experience, the modernized Brno-Královo Pole station is now fully operational with its last platform commissioned, complete with an extended underground passage and an elevator. The reconstructed platform number five in Kolín is also in service, and restrictions on the Karlštejn–Beroun section are nearing their conclusion. Additionally, final works on the new station in Bubny, Prague, and the adjacent section to Výstaviště station are complete, with the visitor terrace at Bubny station reopening on December 15.
