Introduction

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) received two awards in Toronto on Oct. 19, recognizing the company’s geotechnical engineering team’s work with Tetra Tech on a waterbody monitoring system using artificial intelligence and remote sensing across more than 12,600 miles.

Awards Recognition

The Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine and the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada presented the awards to CPKC. The awards honored the CPKC geotechnical engineering team for their efforts to reduce risk and enhance operational safety.

Waterbody Monitoring System

CPKC collaborated with Tetra Tech to develop an advanced waterbody monitoring system. This system utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and remote sensing techniques, including satellite data collection, to identify water-related hazards.

Operational Scope

The system monitors over 1.2 million waterbodies. The area covered by the system spans more than 12,600 miles.

Technology and Implementation

AI analyzes the collected images and generates alerts for potential hazards. The Innovation and Technology Award and the Schreyer Award were accepted on behalf of the CPKC team by Tom Bourgonje, vice president engineering, and Mehwish Rahman, director geotechnical engineering.
